Computer hard drives can and will fail for many reasons such as overheating or just simply wear out. I usually tell clients that their computer hard drive is good for about 5 years and anything over that they are on borrowed time. Regardless how old one's computer hard drive is, I always suggest to backup on a regular basis to an external storage device. Many external storage devices are very reasonable in cost. And in my opinion any external storage device is worth the money when you consider the data loss such as financial documents or photos is a major disaster.
Backing up your data and program files are very important. First, program files include the Windows operating system and all of the programs (software) you run on your computer. If the hard drive fails and you have your backup of the program files you can get your computer fixed faster. Second, data files include all files you created using the programs on your computer. Data files are the MOST IMPORTANT files on your computer. Data files can include email messages, documents you've written, digital photos, music files, etc. If your hard drive fails and you do not have a backup you WILL lose all of these important files.
Backing up your computer's hard drive is a relatively simple task. Basically you copy all of the files on your computer's hard drive and store them on another storage device that you can save away from your computer. I like to backup my program files separate from my data files and I even store all my digital photos and music on separate storage devices too. And it doesn't hurt to have more than one backup, such as on an external device and in the cloud.
