Facebook Pages has a new look.

Facebook has made changes again, and this time if effects your business page. Facebook rolled out Timeline. All business fan pages will be automatically upgraded to this new format on March 30th, 2012.

What is a Facebook Page?

Facebook pages or commonly known as Facebook Fan Pages are for businesses and organizations. Companies would make these fan pages their default landing page. The fan pages typically would direct the viewer to 'Like' their page.

Facebook Page is different from a personal profile. However, Facebook Pages are not separate Facebook accounts. They must be setup as a page on a personal account.

Are Facebook Fan Pages a thing of the past?

Perhaps. As of March 30th, you will no longer be able to setup a Fan Page as your default landing page. The default landing page will be the timeline view of your Page. Which means your cover image and timeline are public whether visitors 'like' your page or not.

So what about your old Fan Page? Well, views and apps will be easy to see below your page's cover image. Your old Fan Page could be one of the apps if your fan page is hosted on a https server.

So, what are the new features of Facebook Pages?

* Add a unique cover photo to the top of your Page/Timeline (brand your page)
* Star stories to make them bigger
* Pin posts to the top of your Page (highlight what matters)
* Add milestones to mark key events
* Arrange views and apps below your cover

But wait, Facebook made restrictions to the cover image.

Cover images may not contain:

* Price or purchase information, such as "40% off" or "Download it at our website"
* Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information
intended for your Page's About section
* References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
* Calls to action, such as "Get it now" or "Tell your friends"

What should I do?

1. Start by creating a cover image that helps promote your company. Such as, an image of a product or service.

2. Improve the icons for your Views and Apps

3. Select a profile picture. (The profile picture is a small image cropped from your left sidebar image. The Timeline gets rids of this sidebar image).

4. Promote your best posts. Two new ways is by Highlight or Pin. Highlight will expand the post to the full width of the page. Pin will make the posts appear at the top of your timeline. However, you can only pin one item at a time and it only lasts for 7 days.

The most common reason for slow computer performance is the hard disk, which is a non-removable area that stores all the information available from your computer. The hard disk may slow the computer's performance as a result of a deteriorating ability to store data efficiently.

Two useful tools provided by The Windows operating system include: Disk Cleanup and Check Disk. On a weekly basis, it is recommended that the computer's hard disk be cleaned of any temporary files and checked for errors.

The best solution to complete all of these tasks is to create a preventive computer maintenance plan through Windows, which allows you to automate these individual tasks.

How to Cleanup Your Hard Disk

Temporary files are one of the items that will eventually start to slow down the efficiency of your computer. Temporary files build up on your computer over time, and there are a number of sources where these temporary files come from including the Internet.

In order to clear your PC of these temporary files, The Windows Disk Cleanup tool should be run once every week. Due to the fact that The Windows Disk Cleanup tool requires user input to complete its designated task, it is important that when setting up the tool to run automatically you choose a time when you are typically on the computer so you can provide this input. You can do this by following the steps below:

Use the Create Basic Task Wizard

Select the Open the Properties dialog for this task and then click the Finish check box

On the Settings tab, select the Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed (Checking the box will ensure that the task starts the next time you are logged on to your computer)

How to Check Your Hard Disk For Errors

Errors on your hard disk, which are created when a computer program in use crashes, can also slow down your computer.

The Check Disk tool corrects these errors on your hard disk, resulting in better PC performance. About once every week, you should run the Check Disk utility.

Note: You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps. If you aren't logged on as an administrator, you can only change settings that apply to your user account.
The solution to the problem lies within Really Simple Syndication, also known as RSS.

What is RSS and What are its Benefits?

The basic idea behind RSS is to provide an easy alternative to search and gather display information from numerous sources including the following:

-News Stories
-Updates to Websites
-Business and Stock Statistics
-New Posts to Blogs

RSS is a device that ultimately saves time by allowing you to subscribe to RSS feeds for particular websites. Once you have subscribed to an RSS feed for a site the new articles will be sent to you once they are available.

The following are the Pros of RSS feeds:

-Timely
-Cost effective
-Works well with emails
-Helps manage and organize content
-Maintains privacy and anonymity
-Helps you save time

Getting Started
1. Get a feed reader, which is one of two types:
-Application-based
-Web-based

2. Visit your favorite website(s) and subscribe to it's feeds. If the website has an RSS feed, you will usually find a small orange RSS icon on the homepage to click to subscribe.

3. Read and manage the information delivered to you.
The following are three reasons why you should synchronize your phone with your PC:

1.) Contacts, Emails, and Calendar Remain Organized

Using your smart-phone to organize your life, read email, and store contact information is a real time-saver. Also, once you have set up syncing your phone and computer, the process will occur automatically.

Here are two different recommended programs:

Windows Phone 7
Windows Mobile 6.5

2.) Store Work, Projects, or Homework on Your Phone

You can do work anywhere, without booting up your laptop. Using Mobile Office, allows you to work Microsoft Word and Excel documents at anytime you desire.

3.) Always Have Your Photos

Using Windows Phone 7, you can instantly upload photos to SkyDrive and then download them to your computer. Additionally, you can use Zune sync software to sync photos just as you do with music. Also, you can use ActiveSync, to do the same if you are using Windows Mobile 6.5.Christyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15785039270857257511noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6013460109281141052.post-46993702618696114412012-01-02T17:34:00.000-08:002012-01-02T17:37:33.285-08:00How to Add More Memory to Your PC

Adding More Memory to Your Computer

When your RAM is unable to store all of your work easily, your computer slows down and becomes more difficult to run. One of the solutions is to expand the space—or install more RAM.

Before purchasing anything, it is necessary to know how much memory is currently in your computer and what type of memory to buy.

How to Find Out How Much RAM Your Computer Has
There are two different ways to find out how much RAM your computer has including the following:

You can open the System Information dialog box to see the installed physical memory

You can go to Control Panel

To open System Information perform the following steps:

click Start, click All Programs

click Accessories

click System Tools

click System Information

In the left pane, select System Summary. The Installed Physical Memory (RAM) entry in the list tells you how much RAM your computer has.

The Installed Physical Memory (RAM) entry in the System Information list tells you how much RAM your computer has.

How to Find Out How Much RAM is Needed
The operating system determines the amount of RAM that's needed. Systems running Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP, should have the minimum recommended amount, however more may be better. If the PC is solely used for surfing the Internet and writing letters, it may only require the minimum amount of RAM required to run the version of Windows you have installed on your computer. In order to allow for the best performance possible —consider increasing the RAM on your computer to at least 2 gigabytes (GB). 4 GB is ideal.

How to Figure Out What Type of RAM is Needed
Contact the manufacturer or use an online memory advisor, such as those from Crucial Technology or Kingston Technology. These memory advisors use information that you enter about your computer model and do a memory check for your specific PC that tells you which products work with your system.

Installing the New RAM
It is recommended that you consult a professional if you have not installed RAM before. We offer affordable installation services and can assist you with increasing your RAM. Call our office for more details and to setup an appointment.

As more people begin using laptops, the number of laptop thefts are increasing. If your laptop computer is stolen, or if someone gains access to your files, your company, personal and financial data can be exposed.

Don't use computer bags.
Computer bags only make it more obvious that you're carrying a laptop. The use of padded briefcases or suitcases is recommended.

Use passwords that are strong, and not kept in the computer bag.
Strong passwords make it more difficult to break into your computer deterring individuals from trying to access your files.

Encrypt data.
With the Windows Operating System, you can choose to encrypt files and folders. Which causes individuals to not be able to read data and see your information.

Keep an eye on your laptop. Don't lose sight of your bag, such as when going through airport security.

Buy a laptop security device.
If you need to leave your laptop in a room or at your desk, use a laptop security cable to securely attach it to a heavy chair, table, or desk. The cable makes it more difficult for someone to take your laptop. There are also programs and devices that will report the location of a stolen laptop.

Do not leave your laptop in a hotel room.
If you must leave your laptop in the hotel room, place the do not disturb sign on the door.

Put your name and contact info on the laptop.
In addition to putting your name on the laptop, it is also recommended that you include a, "Reward with no questions asked if returned." tag line as well. Both of these increase the chance of your laptop being returned, no matter what the circumstance.
Programs that won’t load quickly, don’t function correctly, freeze, won’t show up on your desktop or don’t install properly can all be fixed. Here are some tips on how to troubleshoot Windows software problems.

Obviously, first make sure the program you have installed is compatible with Windows 7, Windows Vista or whatever version you are running.

Second, make sure your computer meets the software’s minimum system requirements. You will need to upgrade your equipment to run software that exceeds your system’s capacity. Computers that barely comply with minimum requirements may perform unreliably or slowly when their capacity is being maxed out.

Some software works better when few other programs are running, so close windows and programs you aren’t using. Try the program in question again after you close everything else.

Make sure at least 5 to 10 percent of your total hard drive space is free to get the best performance from your Windows 7 or Windows Vista machine. This makes programs run faster and prevents annoying crashes. Use a disk cleanup utility to free some space if you’re running short.

Visit your software maker’s website for updates and notes about frequent issues. If it’s a Microsoft program, run Windows Update and let it load all patches. Once you’ve installed all available updates for your system, restart the computer before you try your software again.

Improve your system’s overall performance by deleting or uninstalling any unwanted programs. Windows 7 and Windows Vista work best when they’re not cluttered, so this may improve your software’s performance.

Check your Startup folder and disable any Windows 7 or Windows Vista programs that load automatically when you start the computer. Once again, restart after making these changes.

Next, further improve the performance of your machine by running its defragmenting utility to optimize your hard drive.

If your new software still isn’t working correctly, scan for spyware and viruses. Both Windows 7 and Windows Vista can use Windows Defender, which can help eliminate threats and reduce pop-ups that claim system resources.

Following these steps should get any piece of software up and running. Software can be finicky, and so can many computer systems. Every problem, however, has a solution.
I usually tell clients that their computer hard drive is good for about 5 years and anything over that they are on borrowed time. Regardless how old one's computer hard drive is, I always suggest to backup on a regular basis to an external storage device. Many external storage devices are very reasonable in cost. And in my opinion any external storage device is worth the money when you consider the data loss such as financial documents or photos is a major disaster.

Backing up your data and program files are very important. First, program files include the Windows operating system and all of the programs (software) you run on your computer. If the hard drive fails and you have your backup of the program files you can get your computer fixed faster. Second, data files include all files you created using the programs on your computer. Data files are the MOST IMPORTANT files on your computer. Data files can include email messages, documents you've written, digital photos, music files, etc. If your hard drive fails and you do not have a backup you WILL lose all of these important files.

Backing up your computer's hard drive is a relatively simple task. Basically you copy all of the files on your computer's hard drive and store them on another storage device that you can save away from your computer. I like to backup my program files separate from my data files and I even store all my digital photos and music on separate storage devices too. And it doesn't hurt to have more than one backup, such as on an external device and in the cloud.
